Outdoor Living Trends That Bring the Indoors Outside

Posted on:  May 3, 2016

For years we’ve been using the expression “bringing the outdoors in” when we talk about the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces and maximizing natural light. Today, outdoor living trends are demonstrating the exact opposite and are actually bringing elements of a home’s indoor spaces outside. As we see the growing popularity of entertaining outdoors, remodeling and decorating trends have been adapting to make your outside environments as functional and comfortable as possible. Here are five outdoor living trends that demonstrate that movement.

Outdoor Kitchens

The trend today is to go way beyond just the grill.   Outdoor kitchens can have all the bells and whistles of an indoor kitchen and then some. Many include pizza ovens, warming drawers, and kegerators complete with beautiful cabinetry and countertops. Designs often incorporate and island or bar area seating for easy entertaining.

Outdoor Living Rooms

The movement of entertaining outdoors makes comfort an important consideration. Families are spending more time outdoors than indoors when weather permits. Outdoor living rooms can be just as cozy as your indoor version by selecting comfortable weather-resistant sectionals, ottomans, tables, and area rugs.

Fire Features

Add to your outdoor living room with a fire feature. For cooler nights and added ambiance a fireplace or fire pit is the way to go.  These features create a great focal point and allow you to use your outdoor space when the weather gets cooler.

Multiple Light Sources

Outdoor lighting is just as important as it is indoors when it comes to functionality and aesthetics. In fact, you can have even more fun with lighting outside by highlighting water features, gardens, or privacy walls.

Color

Expand your palette outdoors by painting your fence a shade that complements your home’s exterior or if you’re bold, pick something that makes more of a statement. You can also add color with your outdoor furnishings with cushions, throw pillows, awnings, or umbrellas.
